I, Galileo Galilei, son of the late Vincenzio Galilei of Florence, swear that I have always, and will always be a believer of God; I do not wish there to be a bitter argument between religion and science, rather a healthy relationship between the two.
I am not doubting the words of the Bible; but nevertheless, the Sun is the centre of the universe and immovable, and the Earth moves around it. Many of you have named me as a disbeliever of our God; you have said that in the Bible, Psalm 93:1, Psalm 96:10, 1 Chronicles 16:30, it was clearly said that "The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved," but these such words in the Bible should not be taken quite so literally. Through my telescope, I have spend time observing the planet of Venus; seeing it go through a full set of its phases. If the Earth was truly stationary, and the Sun revolved around our Earth, as the Ptolemaic System states, Venus would not be fully lit from the perspective of Earth.
Nicolaus Copernicus also once proposed that the Earth be heliocentric, and he was a firm believer of God. I, like him, truly am a devout believer of our God, and the Virgin Mary, and do not wish at all to go against them; the writings in the Bible are, without a doubt, true; and I, Galileo Galilei, only wish for religion and science to be side by side.
